Souillac

Set in the heart of the Dordogne Valley mid-way between Rocamadour and Sarlat, close to many caves, castles, museums and some of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, Souillac is the gateway to the South of France. This charming little town in its picturesque setting has plenty to offer: the Abbey church, the former parish church of St. Martin (12th century tympanum), seven railway viaducts, the National Museum of Automata, and the atmospheric old streets, which you can stroll around at leisure, or visit on the little road train. Quality accommodation is available to you: hotels, camp sites, holiday cottages, bed and breakfast, furnished lets, holiday villages, etc… And our flavoursome, refined local cuisine is here to tempt you: foie gras, truffles, duck, Cahors wine, fine plum brandy – the pride of the Quercy-Perigord region, all given pride of place by our chefs.

This is my home town!

Souillac is a bustling market town.  It's still very French which is very evident on Friday's, market day.  Still the locals come out to buy local goodies and then they seem to spend the rest of the time chatting to friends who they may not see from one Friday to the next, catching up on weekly events in their respective lives.   So many regional products
on offer.
From local fois gras to the very famous Rocamadour cabecou cheese.

There are many things to do around Souillac, which are listed under Tourist Attractions.  However, here is a little taster of some of the more tradtional events....
The annual giant boot fair!  Wherever you go, which ever way you turn, there are stalls!  Cafe's are full to bursting.  Everyone very jolly and happy to be seeing others they know (a repeat of market day!) and you can get some really fantastic bargains.  I still love to find those real old French antique kind of gems.  Makes me feel more part of France to have some old artifacts in my house!
There are many other annual events in the town, one is the jazz festival that brings jazz lovers from all over.
And this one, one of my favourite spots by the river Dordogne and where I take my dog for a walk everday!

Souillac has everything that you need in a small town.  Large supermarkets, industrial area, schools, including the famous Lycée hotelier - one of the top schools in France for budding Chefs.  (My son also attends this school!).  There is a good selection of shops, pharmacies, bakers and butchers etc.  A cinema, lots of choices of restaurants, anything from the finest cusine to a quick pizza.  Oh and an Irish pub - and yes they serve guiness!!
